18-8 Stainless Steel (A2):
This grade is also known as AISI 304 or 304 stainless steel.
It contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
18-8 stainless steel screws offer good corrosion resistance and are suitable for general-purpose applications, both indoor and outdoor. They are commonly used in construction, furniture assembly, and other non-demanding applications.
316 Stainless Steel (A4):
This grade is also known as AISI 316 or 316 stainless steel.
It contains approximately 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum.
316 stainless steel screws provide excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine and highly corrosive environments. They are commonly used in coastal areas, marine applications, and chemical industries.
These two grades (18-8 and 316) are the most widely available and commonly used stainless steel screw grades. However, there are other stainless steel grades with different alloy compositions that offer specific properties for specialized applications. These include stainless steel screws made from alloys such as 410, 416, 430, and others, which are tailored for specific requirements such as increased strength, improved machinability, or high-temperature resistance.
When choosing stainless steel screws, it's important to consider the specific application, environment, and the level of corrosion resistance required. Different grades of stainless steel have varying levels of corrosion resistance, strength, and cost. Selecting the appropriate grade will ensure the screws perform optimally and provide the desired level of protection against corrosion.
