Different Types of Steel Fasteners

Apr 07,2023

A Steel fastener (US English) or fastening (UK English) is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together. Examples include screws, bolts, nuts, washers and hinges.
Fasteners come in many shapes and sizes, from small nut and screw fasteners to large anchor bolts and studs. The material they are made of can also be important, as different fasteners have distinct characteristics.
Steel is the most common fastener material and can be found plain, or with a wide variety of surface treatments. Stainless steel is commonly used for high-performance applications and can be plated with nickel, chromium, and other alloying elements to improve corrosion resistance and appearance.
Low Carbon Bolts and Nuts
There are several different kinds of mild steel, with varying carbon content. Mild steel is typically 0.04% to 0.30% carbon, and can be produced in a number of forms from flat sheet to structural beam.
Resulfurized and Rephosphorized Steels
These types of steel have better machinability than basic plain carbon steels, but are still less ductile than high-carbon alloys with equivalent carbon content. Sulphur and phosphorous act as lubricants and reduce friction, heat, and tool wear.
HSLA Bolts and Nuts
HSLA bolts are a class of low-carbon steels that have been heat treated to increase their strength. Depending on the type of treatment, they can range in hardness from Rc=66 to Rc=67 with 10% compression ductility and a fracture strength of 4500 MPa.
These types of bolts are great for industrial projects as well as home DIY jobs, and they can be used with confidence knowing that they’ll hold strong. They’re also resistant to rust and corrosion, which means they’re ideal for outdoor use or operations that will expose them to moisture.
